Background of the Study

Economic empowerment programs are designed to improve the financial independence and social status of women, potentially influencing their capacity to participate in political processes. In Makurdi, Benue State, several initiatives aimed at empowering women economically have been launched in recent years. This study seeks to examine how these programs have impacted women’s political participation, especially in local governance, by fostering leadership skills, increasing confidence, and providing financial resources necessary for political campaigns and activities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the numerous economic empowerment programs targeting women in Makurdi, their actual influence on women’s political participation remains under-explored. It is unclear how these programs translate into increased political involvement, particularly in terms of women running for office, participating in political campaigns, and making political decisions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of economic empowerment programs on women’s participation in local political activities in Makurdi.

  2. To identify the barriers that women still face in translating economic empowerment into political participation.

  3. To explore the relationship between financial independence and women’s ability to run for political office.

  4. To recommend policies and strategies to strengthen the link between economic empowerment and political participation.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have economic empowerment programs influenced women’s participation in political activities in Makurdi?

  2. What are the challenges women face in converting economic empowerment into political involvement?

  3. How do economic empowerment programs impact women’s ability to contest elections and hold political office?

  4. What additional measures can enhance the effectiveness of economic empowerment programs in encouraging political participation?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Economic empowerment programs significantly increase women’s political participation in Makurdi.

  2. Financial independence resulting from economic empowerment enhances women’s confidence to run for political office.

  3. Women’s participation in political activities is influenced by both economic empowerment and the availability of political mentorship.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings will be valuable for policymakers, women’s rights organizations, and stakeholders in political and development sectors, providing insights into how economic empowerment can directly or indirectly improve women’s political representation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on women in Makurdi who have participated in various economic empowerment programs. Limitations may include challenges in collecting data from all participants and potential biases in self-reported participation levels.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Economic Empowerment Programs: Initiatives aimed at improving women’s access to resources, income, and financial independence.

  • Political Participation: The involvement of women in political processes, including voting, running for office, and influencing policy.

  • Political Leadership: Holding a position of authority or decision-making power within a political structure.
